The inaugural ceremony for the issuance of digital national birth certificates under the E-Civil Registration Program introduced by the Department of Registrar General was held today (24th) at the auditorium of the Ratnapura Divisional Secretariat. The event was presided over by the Ratnapura District Secretary/Government Agent and Additional Registrar General Mr. K.G.S. Nishantha.
From January 1, 2021, to February 26, 2025, children born in the Ratnapura District will be able to obtain this national birth certificate from any Divisional Secretariat within the district. The Department of Registrar General expects to further expand this service in the future.
This digital national birth certificate is a modern, secure document compared to the traditional paper certificate. Since the information is stored in a data system in a tamper-proof manner, the possibility of producing forged documents is minimized. Additionally, it is more suitable for international use, including overseas travel and legal procedures, and the certificate can be obtained in Sinhala and English, or Tamil and English. This eliminates the need for separate translations of the birth certificate. Furthermore, any amendments made to the certificate are updated in real-time within the data system.
